CHIROTA Project's Core Value:

Promote dignity, nutrition, healthy life and hope to vulnerable elderly people in Ethiopia.


CHIROTA Project is established

  • to provide home-based support to elderly people especially those in need due to physical or mental frailty, isolation or poverty;
  • making sure that they get help for their basic needs such as food, water, shelter;
  • improve their health and quality of life;
  • help them develop positive self-esteem;
  • live with dignity and hopefulness in a safe as well as supportive environment.


Goals and Services

CHIROTA Project is initiated in June 2010 and started its operations as of January 1, 2011 in Gulele Kifle Kitema (Woreda), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Initially at its first phase, it started with ten elderly households with their dependents. At the second phase, as of January 2012, it assisted 15 elderly people including their dependents.  Starting its third phase in 2016 until the present date, CHIROTA Project is assisting 20-21 elderly households (25-30 people with their dependents).  They are provided with:
  • daily two meals assistance;
  • rent payment and repair of shelters to make it inhabitable;
  • shelter for the homeless: (i)renovating of crumbled homes (ii) preparing a home setting accommodation for those without homes;
  • health care by taking them to clinic and hospitals;
  • necessary clothing, shoes, and bedding;
  • payment of expenses such as water, electricity and sanitary material;
  • home visits to avoid loneliness (check on them, listen to them);
  • cleaning services twice a month to those who are lonely;  
  • provide support to their immediate families to earn money; and
  • provide support at the time of grief and trauma.


Support Activities of the Project:

  • Provide counseling to change the elderly people's mentality as dependent, to reinforce their self-respect and self-esteem;
  • Help the elderly people to use their knowledge and creativity in order to support themselves;
  • Assist and guide the elderly people to appreciate the blessings of long life, to live in peace, in harmony and to participate in the society.
