"It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving. If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one." Mother Theresa
Who We Are
CHIROTA Elderly Neighbors Goodwill Project in Ethiopia, Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt, charitable project founded by a concerned individual with support of family and friends.
Background
The founder of CHIROTA Project was an employee of the United Nations for many years. While she was working in the information analysis division of the humanitarian sector, she came to know better the gravity of the human despair in the world due to conflicts and natural disasters. Moreover, she learned about the continuous efforts of the international community to improve the life of vulnerable people and the need for others to do their share.
As a retiree now, she often travels to Ethiopia and visits local markets, low-income neighborhoods, talks to disadvantaged people, gets news from media and newspapers, attends Church services and social events.
She generally observed that, even though more work still has to be done, the humanitarian organizations, generous people of Ethiopia and the world at large are trying to address the need of orphans, poor children, young and old generation of men and women. Furthermore, she and her husband have also made several attempts to assist those in need in an ad hoc manner. However, the daunting number of poor people makes it important to provide assistance in a well structured manner.
Therefore, in June 2010, the founder initiated previously known as "Ethiopian Elderly Women Project", now "CHIROTA Elderly Neighbors Goodwill Project in Ethiopia" to help elderly people, focusing on elderly women who are increasingly marginalized in the society or and often begging in the streets.
These elderly women have played an active role in our society, raising children, caring for the sick and old, cooking, cleaning, carrying water and woods, working in the farm and participating in the economic development and so on. In return, they need our unconditional support when they are hungry, sick or lonely. Hence, CHIROTA Project activities were launched on 1 January 2011 hoping that this Project will make a difference in the lives of some women.
As the need for assistance in the cities as well as in some rural areas is huge, she urges other people to provide help in their neighborhoods.
