CHIROTA Project 2014 Summarized Activity Report
(1 January to 31 December)
On behalf of
CHIROTA Elderly Neighbors Goodwill Project in Ethiopia, Inc. and its Board of
Directors, I would like to extend my greetings to you and your family. I would
also like to express our appreciation of your donation in 2014 and beyond.
It is our pleasure to submit to you the 2014 Summarized Activity Report of CHIROTA Project.
I. Introduction
In 2014, CHIROTA Project was successful in providing full assistance to 15 household Elderly People (22 people). It is your donation that makes it possible to continue those services despite the rise of cost of living. Frankly, we could not do what we do now without family and friends such as you.
I travelled to Addis Ababa in December 2013 and I was there until end of March 2014. During my stay, I was monitoring the activities; interviewing the beneficiaries; evaluating the performance of CHIROTA Project and setting a budget for the year. Also, when I was in New York, for the rest of the year, the Administrator and I communicated on phone every other week to closely monitor the activities, to know the medical and other conditions of the Beneficiaries. Moreover, the Board of Directors in New York met every other month to review the progress of the activities and to make decisions. The meetings are recorded by the Secretary of the Board and kept in file for references.
The main activities accomplished in 2014 are:
During our interviews, all Beneficiaries have confirmed by expressing enthusiastically about the good quality of the Injera. They also reported that they are receiving the Injera and the other food products on time.
III. Pocket

Moreover, the Board of Directors in New York met every other month to review the progress of the activities and to make decisions. The meetings are recorded by the Secretary of the Board and kept in file for references.
The main activities accomplished in 2014 are:
- Providing two meals a day
- Give monthly pocket money to pay rent, water, electricity and cooking gas
- Help them to get medical assistance and counseling
- Provide cleaning Services
- Make their dwellings livable
- Visit the Elders to avoid loneliness
During our interviews, all Beneficiaries have confirmed by expressing enthusiastically about the good quality of the Injera. They also reported that they are receiving the Injera and the other food products on time.
We have
received reports from the Administrator and the Volunteers that the food is
much better this year. The main issue we
had for the last few years was the poor quality of the Injera due to shortage
of electricity and many other reasons.
In 2014, the problem was solved as we were able to find Women’s
Association who bake Injera daily using other means at the time of electricity
shortage. At our request, one of the
ladies agreed to bake Injera for CHIROTA Project. Therefore, the beneficiaries
are getting good quality Injera every day. The Advisers and I are completely
satisfied with its taste as well as its quality.
The
Beneficiaries have confirmed to us receiving the monthly pocket money on time and as
budgeted. They also informed us that
they used the money for the purpose designated which are to pay their rent,
water, electricity bills, cooking gas, mutual association fees and more.
IV. Short
summary of the Beneficiaries physical
and health conditions
In 2014, the
health conditions of the Beneficiaries were much better than last year. Those
who have regular checkup were taken to the clinics to get medication refills.
Also those who had some kind of sudden sickness were taken to Clinics.. In the
15 household, there are 22 people and out of this people, 18 needs medical
attention which we regular help as needed.
V. Shelters & Cleaning Services
While visiting the Beneficiaries, we observed that their dwellings were in livable conditions except two houses with roof leakage. The roofs were repaired immediately covering with heavy plastic which is the only solution for the Government owned old houses.
VI. Visitation of Beneficiaries
A report was submitted on visitation of the Beneficiaries by the Administrator, Volunteers as well as by the Messenger. The visitation done was according to the guidelines they were given.
Like previous years, we visited the beneficiaries at their dwellings two to three times. In addition, some, who were able to move around, came to the meeting place to discuss some issues privately. In all our discussions, all Beneficiaries’ responses were very positive. They were excited to see us and repeatedly expressed their gratitude about the help and affection they get from the volunteers which created a family atmosphere. They also requested that their appreciation be conveyed to their supporters.
VII. Volunteers and Employees
The Administrator, Volunteers/Accountant, Volunteer/Medical Assistant, have expressed their willingness to continue assisting the Project with the minimal payment they receive for transportation and communication expenses. We have extended to them our appreciation for their devotion and dedication to help these vulnerable people.
The Cook/Distributor is doing an excellent job collecting the Injera from the Baker; checking the quality and taste of the Injera; putting them in individual containers and giving them to the Messenger to deliver them to the Beneficiaries. We expressed our gratitude to her by giving her few Birr raise on her wage. The Messenger, (55 years old) is a very reliable lady who takes her job very seriously. She delivers the Injera to the Beneficiaries on time. At the same time, she provides information to the Volunteers on the Beneficiaries’ conditions. We extended to her our appreciation for her excellent job and she was given few Birr raise on her wage.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to the relentless and thoughtful Volunteers in Addis Ababa who are taking care of the Elderly People and their dependents with respect and compassion. Without their firm and devoted performance, it could have been difficult to accomplish the goals and objectives of CHIROTA Project.
